Canoe Kayak Coaching Certification Pathways

To begin your coaching journey, all prospective coaches must create an account with the Coaching Association of Canada’s (CAC) Locker: Login/Register Here

The Locker serves as your personal hub for tracking coaching certifications, professional development, and course completion records.

Coaching Certification Requirements

To be qualified to coach within Canoe Kayak Canada (CKC) and the Atlantic Division Canoe Kayak Canada (ADCKC) member clubs, coaches must attain a minimum “Trained” status in an approved coaching certification. The recognized certification levels, in order of progression, are:

  • CanoeKids (Community Coach)

  • Entry Level Competitive Coach (ELCC – Competition Introduction)

  • Competition Development (Comp Dev)

  • Advanced Coaching Diploma (ACD)

  • Chartered Professional Coach (ChPC)

Coaches may begin with either CanoeKids or ELCC. Current or former National Team athletes may apply for an exemption to begin at the Competition Development level.

Choosing the Right Starting Point

  • CanoeKids is ideal for grassroots programming and community-based coaching.

  • ELCC is recommended for coaches working with athletes competing in ADCKC Championships or U12/U14 Championships, as it provides a more comprehensive training foundation.

  • Coaches working with athletes in Canoe Kayak Canada competitions (Canada Cup, National Team Trials, or National Championships) must hold at least an ELCC (Competition Introduction) coaching certification.

  • Comp Dev, ACD, and ChPC are advanced coaching certifications for those seeking a career in coaching.

Understanding "Trained" vs. "Certified" Status

  • Trained: Achieved upon completion of the required modules and coaching certification courses.

  • Certified: Requires successful completion of an evaluation and submission of a portfolio for assessment by an approved ADCKC Coach Evaluator.

National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Modules

In addition to ADCKC-facilitated certification courses, coaches must complete mandatory NCCP Modules. These modules are available in two formats:

  • Self-Directed e-Learning: Accessible via The Locker

  • Virtual Learning with a Facilitator: Available free of charge through Coaching Nova Scotia. Visit Coaching NS for scheduled offerings.
