Lake Banook Flow Pattern

Message to Lake Banook Paddlers and Rowers:

Each year the ADCKC does what’s believed to be the best at ensuring the safety and effective development of all athletes training on Lake Banook; paddlers and rowers.

We recommend the most reasonable and mutually beneficial flow pattern to make sure that all athletes on Lake Banook have an opportunity to train hard and remain safe while doing so.

Based on the training and safety needs of all athletes on lake Banook, we’ve devised this recommended flow pattern:

RED SPACE:

The red space indicates the area where only paddlers are recommended to train. It includes lanes 9-5 in addition to the space on the Creighton Avenue side of the lake.

BLUE SPACE:

The blue space indicates the area where only rowers are recommended to train. It includes lanes 4-1 in addition to lane 0 which is another ‘imaginary’ 18 metre wide lane on the outside of the course on the Prince Albert side of Lake Banook.

YELLOW SPACE:

The yellow space indicates the area where no athletes are recommended to train. It includes the last 100 metres of lanes 4-0 and before the start line on the bridge side of Lake Banook. Considering rowers need additional time to slow down their boats it’s recommended that rowers begin to slow down 100 metres before the finish line.

There are many young and inexperienced athletes training in the space after the finish line between Senobe, Banook, and Mic Mac that don’t have the balance or maneuverability to avoid a collision.

Additionally, the space from before the start line, underneath the bridge, and leading into Lake Mic Mac is also a recommended no training zone. The tight spaces and sharp turns create a difficult space for training. Because this geography is complex it’s recommended that this space remains a no training zone.

ADCKC knows that all water sport athletes want to train effectively and safely. We hope that this flow pattern gives athletes some clarity and understanding about the needs of all Lake Banook athletes.

Any questions or concerns regarding the ADCKC’s recommended flow pattern can be directed to Executive Director, Robin Thomson, at robin@adckc.ca.

Welcome to our New Technical Director

As we wish our past Technical Director the best and plenty of future success, we also welcome our new Technical Director, Mark James, to the team!

Mark is a life-long sprint canoe athlete who began his paddling career at Senobe Aquatic Club on Lake Banook. Mark is ready and eager to make make positive changes in the sport he’s been involved with for so long.

The following message is from Mark:

I’ve been fortunate to be a part of canoe/kayak since I was four years old; as an athlete, coach, and volunteer. Our sport is an incredible community that has provided opportunities for me to succeed in life and give back in many ways as well. This role is a chance for me to help athletes, coaches, and clubs meet their goals and take on new challenges. I am excited to start working with you all! "

With a new teammate comes new ideas, perspectives, initiatives, and objectives. All of which will continue to steer canoe/kayak toward an even more fulfilling experience for our coaches, clubs, parents, volunteers, and of course, our athletes.

Welcome Mark! 👋

Max Thomas

A member of our paddling community was tragically lost in a traffic collision on Friday, May 21. The Atlantic Division of CanoeKayak Canada extends its deepest sympathies to the family of the young man, Max Thomas.

A Go-Fund-Me fundraiser has been organized on behalf of the family. If you are able, please consider sharing the page or contributing to the fundraiser in any way you can.

Farewell to our Technical Director - Jake Jeannot ✌️

The time has come as our Technical Director, Jake Jeannot, will be moving on from his career in the sport of Canoe/Kayak. The following is a letter from Jake.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my time has come to move on from our sport. Many years ago while spending my days tipping off the dock at Abenaki, I would never have guessed this is how it would all go.

I have been extremely fortunate to have crossed paths with so many amazing people, and experience everything paddling has given me. Whether it was racing my way down the lake, working with top level athletes, or getting someone into the boat for their first time this sport has taught me countless lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

My time at ADCKC has been more than I could have asked for. I am excited about where we have been, what we have done and where we are going. Amongst all the obstacles over the last few years, particularly this one our sport has persevered and shown true resiliency. Paddling is alive and well.

I am moving on to pursue a new career, one that will allow me to have further community outreach and continue to push the grassroots of sport. Thank you to my team at ADCKC, the hardest working group I know that can still have a good time doing it! You guys are rockstars. Thank you to all of the coaches, our fearless leaders. Thank you to the volunteers, the backbone of our community. Thank you to the parents, and most of all thank you to the best athletes in the nation. It takes a village and none of this is possible without you.
It has been a pleasure being a part of this special community. Thank you everyone, and goodbye for now.”

Yours in sport,

Jake

Jake is a valued employee of the ADCKC. All staff and board members wish Jake the best with any and all future endeavours and know that no matter where his career leads, he will be an extremely valuable member of any team.

All the best, Jake!

Bringing the Atlantic Division Back Together - (Designed by Michael Piggott)

For a year with so much time spent apart, we figured it was time to bring everyone back together!

As we approach the summer months filled with friendly competition and comradery, it’s important to look back and see how far we’ve come. As a testament to everyone working hard to reunite the sport by doing their part, talented local artist Michael Piggott has created the design above to showcase the strength and oneness of the coaches, parents, volunteers, officials, and, of course, athletes who make up the Atlantic Division. All three versions of the design are available on the ADCKC website for purchase and the proceeds will go directly toward this summer's Outreach Program.

The outreach program is a chance for the Atlantic Division to expand and provide everyone with an opportunity to participate in paddle sports.

Visit the ADCKC website store to purchase one of the three versions 👍
